Organic Ice Cream: A Greener Party in Your Mouth

With summer months finally on their way, ice cream offers a great way to keep cool, and these days, there are a growing number of organic or dairy-free options available.

Organic Meadow has a selection of organic ice creams available. The company is a cooperative of Ontario organic farmers, and its products are available in most Canadian provinces. Along with the more traditional vanilla, strawberry and chocolate, they also offer more decadent options like Praline Dream or Raspberry Chocolate Chunk.

Mapleton’s Organic is my own favourite, with amazing flavours of both frozen yogurt and delicious ice cream. I know this is blasphemy, but I like it better than Haagen Dazs. Really.

In the US, the Straus Family Creamery offers organic ice cream made without gums, thickeners or coloring agents. Along with the more traditional flavours, they also have creations like Brown Sugar Banana and Caramel Toffee Crunch.

If you’re looking for something dairy-free, Turtle Mountain sells a range of non-dairy frozen deserts made from almond milk, coconut milk and soy under their SO Delicious label. Available in most natural food stores and many mainstream grocery stores, the company has a vast array of products including ice cream sandwiches and ice cream bars.
