Sign Change.Org Petition to Keep Child Labour Out of Chocolate

endchildlabourchoc

Children and chocolate are a natural combination at Easter. But far more disturbing is the fact that the chocolate we enjoy this holiday may have been produced through the efforts of a child slave on one of West Africa’s cocoa plantations. These young children toil in the fields to harvest the cocoa beans that go into most major brands of chocolate. But while most companies have managed to launch at least one line of ethical or fair trade chocolate, Lindt and Ferrero Rocher have yet to produce any products that are guaranteed to be free of child labour, according to World Vision’s Chocolate Scorecard.

Which is why this petition at Change.org is taking advantage of the Easter holiday to call on Lindt and Ferrero to make a commitment to ending child labour by creating at least one fair trade product, as well as introducing a timeline for phasing out all use of non-fair trade cocoa. You can also get in touch with the companies directly, via the Ferrero and Lindt Facebook pages to let them know your thoughts on child slavery.

More information about the hidden cost of chocolate, and what is being done about it, is available on the CNN Freedom Project blog.

Dear all, thank you for getting in touch about this very important issue. Lindt strongly condemns child labor and remains committed to eradicating it from cocoa production. To that end, over the last few years, Lindt has initiated a number of important steps within in its cocoa supply chain and dedicated US $5 million to address this highly complex issue.
